Iran’s economy is reeling from widespread power cuts with authorities slashing gas supply to power plants amid unprecedented winter heating demand since mid-November (MEES, 15 November 2024). Frigid temperatures continue to drive heating usage with national gas consumption of 875mn m3/d (30.9bn cfd) on 20 January smashing the previous daily record of 858mn m3/d set a month earlier (MEES, 20 December 2024).
National Iranian Gas Co (NIGC) says that 73% of those supplied volumes were consumed by “domestic, commercial and small industries” – a category dominated by residential users.
