UAE firm Amea Power has tapped China’s JA Solar to supply 1.25GW of “high-efficiency n-type photovoltaic (PV) modules” for the 1GW, $850mn ‘Abydos II’ solar plant Amea plans at Benban in the far south of Egypt. Though Amea has yet to announce financial close or when it expects to begin construction, the 20 January JA Solar release says that the project will be “constructed by CEEC” (China Energy Engineering Corporation). Taken together with the panel award this implies a near-term start to work.
JA Solar says the 20km2 solar park “is expected to generate approximately 3,000GWh annually” for an implied average of 340MW (34% load factor). Amea in September signed a power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for the project which is to include 600MWh battery energy storage (BESS) capacity (MEES, 20 September 2024).
